State Teaching Job Initiatives

The Indiana Department of Education maintains its website to assist teachers in finding job opportunities. Prospective teachers can use the new job bank to search job openings in various areas throughout the state. Teacher shortages have made Indiana a popular state for highly qualified beginning teachers. Math, science, special education, and inner-cities are in desperate need for highly qualified instructors.

Salary & Incentives

Compensation for Indiana teaching jobs has continued to rise, with the average annual base salary for teachers in 2009 at $49,569.  Indiana follows a salary schedule for teachers that increases pay according to years of teaching experience, and college degree level.

Professional Development

Indiana requires that the Professional Development Programs must emphasize improvement of student learning and performance. The program must also be developed by the committee that is setting the issues and goals for the school system. The state has passed new regulations that will be in effect in 2013, requiring that teachers pass an exam that tests their knowledge and that they earn baccalaureate degrees in the subject that they teach. To learn more, check out the Professional Development Page on Indiana’s Board of Education website.

Indiana public school teachers become vested in the state retirement system after 10 years of service. The average retirement age for Indiana teachers is 65. The Indiana State Teachers Retirement Fund aims to provide members with the best retirement and benefit services offered in the state of Indiana. Indiana offers additional benefits for teachers, including health and dental benefits according to the county or school district.
