State Teaching Job Initiatives

For many years now, Georgia has been plagued with a shortage of teachers in most areas of the state. Georgia’s Department of Education Human Resource Page assist prospective teachers in finding jobs around the state. The state also maintains a site called Teach Georgia that lists shortages and position openings for current and prospective teachers. Now more than ever, Georgia is in need of highly qualified teachers to enhance their state department of education.

Salary & Incentives

In 2007, Georgia ranked 17th in the nation for teacher pay with an average salary of $49.836. Georgia follows a salary schedule for teachers that increases pay according to years of teaching experience, and college degree level. In 2010, the Georgia teacher salary schedule ranges from $31,586 for first-year teachers with the minimum certification requirements, to $72,530 for teachers with at least 21 years of teaching experience, and the highest level of Georgia teacher certification.

Professional Development

In Georgia, a teacher must earn Professional Learning Unit (PLU) credits each year to maintain their teaching certification. Each unit of credit for a PLU is based on 10 hours of contact time. Every five years, a certified teacher must earn 10 credits of PLU. To learn more, check out an online summary of the requirements or the state’s Professional Development Page.

Benefits & Retirement

Teachers become vested in the state retirement system after ten years of service. The average retirement age of a teacher in Georgia is 60, with typically around 10 years of service. The Teachers Retirement System of Georgia (TRSG) serves teachers in Georgia looking for assistance with their retirement. TRSG provides two types of retirement plans to meet different needs. Georgia also offers additional benefits to teachers, such as health care plans and an annual number of sick days.
