Salary and Incentives

In 2007, Arkansas ranked 30th in the nation for teacher pay with an average salary of $41,489. Compensation for Arkansas teaching jobs has increased slightly since then, with the average annual base salary for teachers in 2009 at $41,590, with an annual salary range of $26,934 – $51,581.  Arkansas follows a salary schedule for teachers that increases pay according to years of teaching experience, and college degree level. The required minimums for teacher compensation in Arkansas are $29,244 for teachers with bachelor’s degrees, $33,630 for teachers with a master’s degree, and $41,430 for teachers with a doctorate degree.

Professional Development

Arkansas Department of Education has a page dedicated to professional development requirements.  In order to renew a teaching license, a teacher must be able to document 60 hours of professional development a year in many areas of education. Through this, teachers in Arkansas are guaranteed to continually imporve their teaching practices and methods. All professional development must be completed within either of the following cycles: June 1 – May 31 OR July 1 – June 30 of each year.

Benefits and Retirement

Arkansas provides benefits such as healthcare, dental, vision, as well as optional programs such as life insurance and supplemental upgrades. In addition, the Arkansas Teacher Retirement Association has been providing retirement benefits to Arkansas teaching since 1937. The program helps compensate teachers for their continued service to the Arkansas education system.
