State Teaching Job Initiatives

The Alaska Department of Education, partnered with the University of Alaska, offers an Alaska teacher placement site which details job possibilities in many school districts throughout the site. Along with job postings by the state, this site has information on upcoming job fairs in Alaska as well as in surrounding states, such as Washington and Minnesota. Also available through the states department of education is a district by district look at all of the shortages and needs. This can be searched both by district and by the subject that the teacher wishes to teach.

Salary and Incentives

In 2007, Alaska ranked 11th in the nation for teacher pay with an average salary of $54,678. Alaska school districts each follow a salary schedule for teachers that increases pay according to years of teaching experience, and college degree level. For the 2008-2009 school-year, the Anchorage school district salary schedule ranged from $41,266 for a first-year teacher with a bachelor’s degree, to $72,993 for teachers with at least 18 years of teaching experience and doctorate degree.

Professional Development

Alaska subscribes to a comprehensive professional development and assessment program, mandated for all teachers as a means of continually advancing the quality of education in the state. This program includes everything from alcohol and drug related disabilities courses to school emergency response methods. The Alaska department of education mandates this professional development for all teachers to be completed within a specified amount of time from the first day of teaching. A link to the summary of this program can be found below.

Benefits and Retirement

The state of Alaska offers benefits that include healthcare plans such as full dental plans, long-term disability, and long-care health insurance. A state retirement program called the Teacher Retirement System has been set up to guarantee continuing benefits after a career of dedicated teaching and instruction. Specific in formation is available at the Alaska division of retirement and benefits.
