Trade Schools a Good Solution?

During a recession, paying high tuition costs for traditional four-year colleges does not always seem to be the most practical or even plausible route. With a continuously struggling job market, many potential university students are opting for a simpler, quicker route, namely: trade schools or for-profit universities.

It truly is no wonder why. With in-your-face commercials and advertisements promising a program that will feed you directly into the workplace, people struggling to make ends meet would naturally be inclined to try the road less traveled. But as more and more people invest in these trade schools, many are finding that these promises are turning out to be as empty as their wallets.

It could be due to the flooded marketplace, but these institutions have been receiving criticism for undelivered claims since their inception. Whether it be food service, cooking, technology, or health care services, students continually find that if they can find a job, it is one providing meager salaries barely capable of paying of the loans they took out to pay tuition. Tuition for these for-profit schools is an average of $14,000 according to College Board.

Institutions receive large amounts of their revenue from federal students loans, often yielding high interest payments. According to BMO Capitol Markets, University of Phoenix group Apollo earned 86 percent of its revenue from loans last fiscal year, versus 69 percent two years ago.

While many students can find success by pursuing the commercials and billboards popping up everywhere, it is important to note that these institutions, much like any other University, are not a sure thing. When considering pursuing a quick-fix education, remember that quality does not always mean impractical.

On-line education is becoming more ubiquitous, and renowned schools are increasingly opting to bring their name and reputation to more and more people. For-profit schools are no longer the sure way out that they promise to be.
