Teachers Making a Difference: Euan Blackman

Teaching is hardly an overly glorified profession. Indeed, people often forget the extent of the impact teachers can have. For this reason, it is important to acknowledge when a teacher goes above and beyond the call of duty to make a difference in the world.

It could be anything from taking personal time to help a struggling student  to opening a school in Africa where children would not otherwise have access to education. Though there is no shortage of examples of this occurring, some instances are more unheralded than others.

One such example can be found on a blog site appropriately named “Teachers Making a Difference”. A team of teachers led by Euan Blackman teamed up in 2006 to form TMD, a non-profit organization that has pledged to assist at-risk sub-Saharan African children gain access to a proper education. These children are affected by everything from violence to AIDS.

Their latest project, completed in July 2009, included bringing the classroom of KwaNtenbeni Comprehensive High School into the 21st century. Through $3,500 of renovations and technological additions, the children will be able to have access to some of the educational tools that many high students in America take for granted.

Thanks to efforts such as this, teachers can make all the difference. Check out TMD.org for more information on Blackman’s mission and projects.
