One of Our Favorite Fictional Teachers: William Forrester
Sometimes the best teachers don’t want to be teachers at all. When Jamal stumbles on recluse writer William Forrester in Finding Forrester, he finds the mentor he needs to foster his own writing skills and earn a ticket out of his dead end schooling and living situation. With some mild coercion, Forrester admits to his storied past and helps Jamal develop the drive to become the writer he has the potential to be.
The unlikely duo help one another out of their respective boxes and become friends as well as a teacher-student tandem. Through a series of snarky yet well-intended interactions it becomes clear the Forrester quite enjoys bestowing his mass of knowledge after so many years spent as a shut-in. Though he never intended to teach anybody, he helps Jamal not only write his best, but even saves him from potential expulsion at the risk of losing his solemn isolation; quite the sacrifice!
