One of Our Favorite Fictional Teachers: John Keating
John Keating (Robin Williams) is the most inspirational and effective English teacher in movie history. Leading a group of impressionable students at a boy’s boarding school in Dead Poets Society, Keating comfortably teaches that the best method of teaching is often the most unconventional. To him, Literature is an art form that is best explored without textbooks. He even told his students to tear pages out of their books!
By helping his students step out of their boxes and dive into their books head first, he teaches them independence and self-confidence. Even when he is dishonorably discharged, his students show him the ultimate sign of respect by standing on their desks and chanting “Oh Captain, my Captain!” despite the Dean of the schools threats of expulsion. How cool is that?
