Innovation in Classroom Becoming a Focal Point
It is clear that technological literacy will only become increasingly crucial as innovation proceeds. As computers quickly become ubiquitous, students will need to learn how to use them at an earlier age. Many schools so not have the resources to teach elementary students to be technologically proficient and therefore put the students at a huge disadvantage.
Just as important, technological innovation opens countless doors for the education industry. Overhead projectors turn into high definition projectors and PowerPoint presentations. Lesson plans can now be run completely on the Internet, broadening the range of potential students. Innovations are completely changing the art of teaching.
Because of all of this, teachers will need to have access to the newest and best technology to most effectively teach their students. However, this is not always possible as many schools lack the funding. All is not lost, as major philanthropic and government funded organizations are focusing on exactly this dilemma.
One such organization is the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Since taking a backseat at Microsoft, Gates has devoted his time to his philanthropic foundation, which donates billions to all sorts of worthy causes.
In his annual foundation letter, Gates expressed his desire to boost innovation in teaching, saying, “If we don’t find ways to improve our schools, making them more effective and more accessible, we won’t fulfill our commitment to equal opportunity, and we will become less competitive with other countries.”
The Department of Education also sees the value in making technology more accessible and improving our schools. With programs such as Innovations in Education and bodies such as the Office of Educational Technology devoting money and time to bring technology to more schools.
It is reassuring that those who have the resources to make an immediate impact understand the obstacles that students and teachers face.
