Don’t Forget About Reading

Despite government official’s attempts to revamp science and mathematical innovation in our schools, a recent report would indicate that there are bigger fish to fry.

National test scores for reading once again indicate poor performance, according to the New York Times. This makes 17 consecutive years of testing in which little or no improvement has been made in reading. This is in comparison to math testing, which has seen substantial increases during that same period.

Though there is not believed to be a direct cause for this trend in performance, it does not take much imagination to come up with some contributing factors. Ina world defined by the newest and best technology, children simply do not devote spare time to reading as they have in the past. The focus is on developing the next best MP3 player or video game, not writing the next great novel.

Though math and science are vital to the nation’s success, it remains important to remember that reading and writing are the building blocks of education. The only improvement seen is amongst the bottom rung of performers. This indicates that basics are being taught, but that a comprehensive and challenging alternative is not being provided to spark improvement for those who do not initially struggle.

While innovation and scientific advancement need to continue to improve, so must reading comprehension. We are not asking our children to read as much, and a lot is at stake if this stagnant trend continues.
